Preferred Restaurants

This is a list of restaurants in the United States that don't cater to the Chuck-E-Cheese crowd. If you have a chance, be sure to support these restaurants!

If you know of a restaurant in your area that should be included on this list, use the contact form to tell me about it!

But first, where NOT to eat.

Colorado

The Augustine Grill
Castle Rock, CO
Restaurant Policy: "For their own safety and in consideration of our other customers, please keep all children seated at the table at all times in the dinning room and patio. Thanks you."

England

Albion Inn
Cheshire, England
(No children allowed)

Florida

Jasmine Thai
Tampa, FL
(Recommended by a childfree person in Florida)

The Taj

Georgia

The Vortex Bar and Grill
Atlanta, GA
(No children allowed)

Germany

Hacienda
Kraiburg, Bavaria
(No children under 12)

Illinois

A Taste of Heaven Cafe
Chicago, IL
(Children allowed, but sign on the door says: "Children of all ages have to behave and use their indoor voices when coming to A Taste of Heaven.")

Wishbone Restaurant
Chicago, IL
(Children allowed, but there is a separate dining room for adults only, reportedly.)

Michigan

Mode's Bum Steer
Traverse City, MI
(No children under 8 after 5pm)

New York

The Frisky Oyster
Greenport, NY
(No children under 12 allowed)

Luigi Q
Hicksville, NY

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House
New York, NY
(Reportedly no children allowed)

Oregon

Baltazar's Mexican Restaurant
Bend, OR
(Children allowed, but not encouraged; no high chairs, and the mommy crowd is currently boycotting this restaurant for daring to not offer high chairs, so it's probably safe for the time being! Please support this brave restaurateur!)

Pennsylvania

Prudhomme's Lost Cajun Kitchen
Columbia, PA
(Children allowed, but sign on the door says in big letters: "Please make sure your children behave or you will be asked to leave.")

Texas

Alamo Draft House (Restaurant and Movie Theater)
Texas Locations: Austin, Houston, Katy, San Antonio, & Rio Grande Valley
(Some locations ban children under 6 (except to children's movies) -- I have not verified if that is true for ALL locations. Call to verify the location you are choosing to visit.)

Star Cinema Grill (Restaurant and Movie Theater)
Houston, TX
(No children under 5 allowed)

Virginia

Funny Bone Comedy Club & Restaurant
Richmond, VA
(All shows 21 and up; no children allowed)

Please let me know about your experiences at any of the above locations.

No restaurant listings in your area? Stay tuned -- I'm sure more restaurants will join this list in time. But in the meantime, follow these tips to try and find some restaurants in your area that are not run like zoos!

  • Never support a business that advertises "kids eat free" as that only means they are charging you more for your meal in order to subsidize the Chuck-E-Cheese crowd.
  • Avoid any restaurant with high chairs and kiddie menus, as they are obviously catering to the exact crowd that we want to avoid.
  • Avoid chain restaurants, as they are more likely to advertise to kids and gullible parents. If you do choose to eat there, I highly recommend getting the food to go.
